About Paragram – Beginnings

Paragram – the who, what and when of us…

For us it began as playing with words. We are a group of writers who perform. We write, we read aloud. At first it was to each other. Poetry, prose, extracts from our novels, all to be shared with other word-lovers.

In November 2011 we performed for the first time to an audience at the Chertsey Bookshop. This was an amazing evening and strengthened our resolve to give the opportunity to as many writers as possible to experience the same buzz.

We also launched our first anthology on that chill November evening, with many copies being sold both at the event and subsequently.

We are dedicated to offering opportunities to writers to perform and publish their writing and so we opened our second, with the theme of ‘Connections’, to global submission.

Published in November 2012 and launched with a reading event at the Poetry Place in Betterton Street, the home of The Poetry Society, this collection was a great success.

Our adventure for 2013 was to inaugurate the Paragram Poetry Prize, a themed competition for new poetry. The winners were awarded a small cash prize, but most importantly all short-listed poetry was published in an anthology, Slants of Light in November 2013 and were invited to perform their work at a reading event at the Poetry cafe in February 2014. The three first placed writers also have a commission for writing which will be published in the 2014 anthology REMEMBER.

With an anthology every evenly numbered year, a poetry prize and chapbook every oddly numbered year, Paragram will achieve its aim to encourage and reward new writing, especially of very short fiction and poetry.

All our anthologies – A Toe in the Water 2011, Connections 2012, Slants of Light 2013, can be purchased at out partner website BehindtheHighStreet
